What Is Melanin?

Melanin is the pigment that is providing color to your skin, hair, and eyes. It is making up of cells called melanocytes in the outer layer of your skin. All have the same number of melanocytes. However, some people’s cells produce more melanin than others and certain types of melanin. Significantly, the more melanin you have, the darker your skin becomes. Sometimes, melanin builds up in some areas and causes darkening of the skin, which doctors may call hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is when parts of your skin become darker than others. Existing melanin deposits can identify, and there are risks and limitations. Mainly, it can also reduce the production of melanin in the skin.

Lemon Juice With Honey

As we know, lemon fruit is a citrus fruit rich in vitamin C, which helps to lighten dark spots on our skin. According to its high antioxidant properties, it helps protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays. When mixed with honey to reduce color, it acts as a natural bleaching agent.

  • Squeeze the lemon into a bowl
  • Mix it with one tablespoon of honey
  • Mix well until it forms a paste
  • Apply it every day for 5 minutes
  • Rinse with lukewarm water

Mashed Tomato With Rose Water

Tomato is a citrus fruit that contains lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. This antioxidant fights free radicals in the body and reduces open pores, blackheads as well. So, regular application of tomatoes on your face can add tone and beauty to your skin.

  • Cut tomatoes in half
  • Then mash the pieces using a blender.
  • After, mix well a few drops of rose water with the mashed tomatoes
  • Apply on your skin for 10 minutes daily
  • Remedy this with lukewarm water

Turmeric & Curd

Turmeric is a readily available spice in Asian countries. Mainly, it is a rich source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that help reduce your skin color. This milk is full of good bacteria that add radiance to your skin. Thus, turmeric and milk paste is perfect for reducing and brightening melanin in the skin.

  • Take half a tablespoon of turmeric.
  • Mix it with three tablespoons of milk
  • Add a few drops of rose water
  • Mix until it forms a paste
  • Apply on your face until the paste dries
  • Remedy this with lukewarm water

Potato Paste

Potatoes are another rich source of antioxidants. It also contains an enzyme called cataclysm, which naturally reduces melanin in the skin. This enzyme does wonders for your skin and reduces excess melanin levels.

  • Cut potatoes into four halves
  • Mash partially using a blender
  • Mix it until it forms a paste
  • As your wish, you can add a few drops of lemon juice as well
  • Then apply on your skin for 15 minutes daily
  • Rinse with cold water


As we know, eating foods rich in vitamins A, C, E, and K can help reduce melanin production. Milk, butter, cheese, whole eggs, broccoli, spinach, carrots, pumpkin, canned potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, and apricots are rich in vitamin-A. All citrus fruits, guava, acid, pineapple, papaya, black currant, strawberry, mango, grapefruit, broccoli, potatoes, tomatoes, spinach are rich in vitamin C. But heating reduces the vitamin, and it should consume in raw or semi-cooked form. Almonds, spinach, sunflower oil, avocado, sweet potatoes, wheat germ oil, are vitamin-E sources that do not directly activate by reducing melanin but do not allow hyperpigmentation. Thus, all dark green vegetables are a rich source of vitamin K, which reduces dark spots in the long run. Changing skin tone may not happen as suddenly as expected and will take time depending on your skin color and the type of food you eat.
